Project Description:
The project has six structural features: Levee 37, Buffalo Creek Reservoir Expansion,
Big Bend Lake Reservoir Expansion, Van Patten Woods Lateral storage area, North Mill Creek Dam
Modification, and Levee 50. The Des Plaines River has a long history of flooding that has caused
significant economic losses. The maximum flood of record, September 1986, caused an estimated $35
million in damage to 10,000 dwellings and 263 business and industrial sites, and required evacuation
of 15,000 residents. In this area of 33 municipalities along 67 miles of river in two counties,
severe impacts to the area transportation networks were also identified.

Current Status:
Continuing plans and specifications on two construction contracts for Levee 37
(floodwall). - IDNR completed construction on second phase of Levee 50 and is preparing to
award a construction contract on third phase of Levee 50. - Negotiating draft PCA (includes
coordination of schedule of work on 4 remaining features). - Coordinating concept design
with stakeholders for Big Bend Reservoir Expansion.
