Smithsonian fellowships allow predoctoral, postdoctoral, and senior postdoctoral scholars to work with Center staff, resources, and collections. Recent fellows have come from a variety of universities--California, Indiana, Johns Hopkins, Memphis State, Nevada, New York University, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Washington, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Yale-- and from China, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Brazil, and Venezuela. A Rockefeller Humanities Fellowships program with Emory University on exhibiting and performing culture has resulted in additional senior and student fellowship residencies.

Fellows have produced films, documentary recordings, Festival programs, and books as a result of the residency, for example, Introduction to American Folk Music, a textbook by professor Kip Lornell, and Making People's Music: Moe Asch and Folkways Records by Dartmouth dean Peter Goldsmith.

Fellowships are very competitive and are awarded annually through the Smithsonian's Office of Fellowship and Grants.
