NEMESIS Research

NEMESIS was developed at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) as a research tool to help understand the underlying patterns associated with marine and estuarine invasive species.

By monitoring the historical distributions of invasive species, we have been able to show that the rate of reported invasion to marine and estuarine systems in the United States has increased exponentially over the past 200 years.

Our research has also shown that the majority of marine invasions have occured due to shipping pathways including ballast water and haul fouling. Shipping patterns differ from coast to coast and port to port, likewise patterns of marine species invasion also differ from on these same scales.
