The air show, established in Los Angeles in 1992, is billed as “the nation’s premier, admission-free, helicopter-only aviation event produced from coast-to-coast by volunteers with a passion for aviation and public service.”
Among the featured events at the show were a “Rolling to the Rescue Caravan,” which was a parade of almost 40 rare and restored fire, police and other emergency services vehicles; a “CODE 3 Career Fair,” which offered a chance for interested fair attendees to speak with representatives from law enforcement, fire services, military and community service agencies; and a “First Promise Family Preparedness Fair,” which presented products, services and resources for families to give a better understanding of how to prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters and emergencies.
“We’re out here to promote water safety to the community,” said Fany Anderson, with the district’s safety office. “This is our third year attending the event.”
Anderson and Anthony Henson were both on hand to provide literature to attendees and educate them on the importance of water safety. The recreation area, which is a flood control basin owned by the Corps of Engineers, is leased to the City of Los Angeles and managed by the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks. Activities include fishing, pedal boat rentals and a swim lake.
“I think its important for people to understand and be made aware of the fact that kids and adults need to properly wear appropriate flotation devices when in or around the lakes,” said Henson. “We also brought boating information with us [to the air show] to give people general boating guidelines. People need to understand they are subject to applicable local rules.”
Anyone interested in more information on the Hansen Dam Recreation Area can visit the city’s Web site at http://www.laparks.org/dos/reccenter/facility/hansendam_all.htm. The facility is open year round, but is subject to closure during severe weather. |
