Training

The following training materials are available:

NPCR Education and Training Series (NETS)
NETS is a series of educational tools for state trainers to support central cancer registries in their role of providing education to staff and reporters. This series is an excellent source of training materials for state trainers and educators to train cancer registry employees (both hospital and central), Certified Tumor Registrars, and incidence reporters.

Brain Tumor Registry Reporting Training Materials
NPCR is pleased to offer these training materials covering data collection for benign, borderline, and malignant central nervous system tumors. All cancer registry standard setting organizations have agreed to use these training materials to promote consistency in training.

Educational Materials for Cancer Registrars
The "Fundamentals of Registry Operations" educational series includes eight training sessions developed by the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) for NPCR. These materials address various cancer registry functions and the necessary procedures for each. This series is an excellent training resource for new employees and provides reference materials for the experienced professional in either the central or hospital registry. The training includes general and specific information on each subject, tutorials, and a comprehensive test.

How to Collect High-Quality Cancer Surveillance Data
The Instructional Abstracting Modules are a series of educational tools for state trainers and self-instruction developed by NAACCR for NPCR. Each module includes anatomy, general information, abstracting review, coding rules for NPCR-required data fields, and determining multiple primaries (before 2007). An abstract form and case scenarios for abstraction along with a pre- and post-test are provided. Individual modules include lung, prostate, breast, melanoma, and central nervous system (both malignant and non-malignant) primary sites.

Cancer Surveillance System Rationale and Approach
This policy resource document presents the CDC's plan for receiving, assessing, enhancing, aggregating, and disseminating cancer data from states funded by NPCR; provides cancer incidence data that meet CDC's responsibilities for public health surveillance; enhances the quality, completeness, timeliness, and content of state cancer registry data and help monitor progress toward NPCR program objectives; and assists in the coordination of cancer surveillance activities across various public health agencies and organizations.
