Information about improving rubella control and strengthening surveillance systems
As cases of measles decline, an increasing number of countries and regions have integrated measles and rubella surveillance. This has helped both to improve rubella control and has strengthened surveillance systems for measles.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has made historical achievements in the elimination of measles and has announced a new effort to eliminate rubella. Many countries in the Region of the Americas have already made great progress in reducing the incidence of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) through accelerated rubella control programs. Costa Rica, Honduras, Brazil and Chile as well as the member countries of the Caribbean have rubella elimination initiatives underway. A target date of 2010 for the elimination of rubella and CRS was set in a Resolution of the Executive Committee of the Member States in September of 2003. (8 pages) (exit)
