FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

Geographic classification code that represents the geographic area and, if applicable, the geographic subarea and populated place name covered by an item.

Code can provide more precise geographic access than the codes contained in field 043 (Geographic Area Code). Each main geographic area code and any related subarea codes associated with the item are contained in a separate 052 field. Subfield $d (Populated Place Name) may contain the name of the geographic area.

INDICATORS

First Indicator - Code source
Code source in subfield $a and information in the other subfields.
# - Library of Congress Classification
Geographic classification code is derived from the Library of Congress Classification-Class G and expanded Cutter number lists for place names. The geographic classification code contains a four to six-character numeric code that consists of the appropriate classification number from the range G3190-G9980 by dropping the letter G. Cutter numbers for place names in the United States are also published in Geographic Cutters. The Library of Congress maintains the Library of Congress Classification, Geographic Cutters, and the Cutter number lists.

Code is from the U.S. Department of Defense Classification system.
7 - Source specified in subfield $2
Number is taken from a classification system other than that specified by one of the other defined indicator values and for which an identifying source code is given in subfield $2.

INPUT CONVENTIONS

Punctuation - Period that usually precedes a Cutter number is omitted in subfield $b. Field 052 does not end with a period.
Capitalization - Alphabetic characters are recorded in uppercase.

Records created prior to 2000 may contain a code # meaning undefined.
0 - U.S. Dept. of Defense Classification [OBSOLETE, 2002]

First indicator value 0 (U.S. Dept. of Defense Classification) was made obsolete. Value 1 was defined as U.S. Dept. of Defense Classification to replace it.
