Council welcomes new member
Following an election victory on 27 January, the Conservative Party of Canada formed a new government in early February. Rona Ambrose, Member of Parliament for Edmonton–Spruce Grove, was named Environment Minister and newest member of the CEC’s governing Council.

Ambrose was first elected to Parliament in 2004 and served as the critic for Intergovernmental Affairs and International Trade. Previously, she held the post of senior intergovernmental affairs officer with the International and Intergovernmental Affairs Department of the Government of Alberta, where she worked on such issues as senate reform, the Kyoto Protocol and the 2003 Canada Health Accord.

A former columnist and communications consultant, Ambrose has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Victoria and a Master of Arts from the University of Alberta.

CEC staff now includes a Yale World Fellow
Chantal Line Carpentier, the senior program manager for Environment and Trade at the CEC, has been accepted into the prestigious Yale World Fellows Program. Yale University President Richard C. Levin made the announcement at the end of April, welcoming 18 new Fellows to the program.

“The World Fellows Program is a crucial component of Yale’s continuing globalization efforts,” says Levin. “I look forward to welcoming this extraordinary new class of World Fellows to Yale.” This year’s World Fellows include the deputy CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the minister of finance of Costa Rica, the director general of the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office, the managing partner of Vietnam’s leading law firm, and a top correspondent at Egypt’s most widely read newspaper.

Carpentier has distinguished herself at the CEC as ardent promoter of the environmental benefits of trade, green procurement and renewable energy in North America. She holds a Ph.D. in agricultural and environmental economics from Virginia Tech, and previously worked in the Brazilian Amazon and at the Wallace Institute for Alternative Agriculture in Maryland.

From September to December, participants will engage in specially designed seminars with distinguished guest speakers, attend courses offered at the university, and meet with United States and foreign leaders.

Colgate-Palmolive participated in the CEC’s supply chain project

Supply chains project yields substantial results
Last issue, Trio featured a CEC project to “green” the supply chains of multinational corporations in the Mexico City region.

The first phase is now complete and the results from 28 suppliers of Colgate-Palmolive, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Janssen-Cilag and Clarion show dramatic pollution prevention, energy, materials and costs savings. Estimates include 15,300 m3/year of water savings, carbon dioxide emissions avoidance of 632.5 tons/year, savings of 112 tons of paper and cardboard/year, and general economic savings of approx US$1 million/year.

The CEC is now approaching its partners and other large companies in Mexico to initiate activities with second-tier suppliers.

New from ‘CEC Press’
Following the adoption of the CEC’s five-year Strategic Plan in June 2005, the organization set about describing how the goals and objectives of that vision statement would be accomplished. The Operational Plan of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation 2006–2008 is such a description, outlining how key initiatives of the CEC will be implemented over the next three years.

Also recently published is the print version of the North American Atlas’ watersheds layer. The Watersheds map was created as a joint effort by the Atlas of Canada, Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Geografía e Informática, and the National Atlas of the United States® under the sponsorship of the CEC.

The map shows the six major North American drainage basins, or watersheds, which drain the Atlantic, Arctic, and Pacific Oceans, as well as Hudson Bay, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Each is shown in its own color, with 17 major river basins shown in tonal variations. To order a 42” x 36” printed copy of the Watersheds map, please send your name, title, organization, and contact information to info@cec.org with “map mailing” in the subject line, or call (514) 350-4347. The North American Atlas and the watersheds layer are both available online at http://www.cec.org/naatlas.
