Crossing the Border: Opportunities to Improve Tracking of Transboundary Hazardous Waste Shipments in North America
Published: 7 October 2005
73 pages
North American companies ship hundreds of thousands of tons of hazardous waste annually between Canada, Mexico and the United States. Since improperly managed hazardous waste can pose a risk to human health and the environment, companies must follow reporting, shipping and record keeping procedures. The domestic laws within each country and specific international agreements to which the NAFTA countries are parties, dictate these procedures.
In order to identify procedural improvements for transboundary hazardous waste shipments, the report describes the current hazardous waste information tracking procedures and systems used by each of the NAFTA countries. The report aims to promote practices that ensure sound management of transboundary hazardous waste shipments and to advance cooperation in this area between the three countries.
Successful Practices of Environmental Management Systems in Small and Medium-size Enterprises: A North American Perspective
Published: December 2005
32 pages
Small and medium-size enterprises in North America may vary widely in their impacts on the environment. An environmental management system (EMS) offers the methodology a company needs to identify and implement ways in which to improve the environment, from mere good housekeeping steps to strategies to prevent pollution.
This report examines the use of EMSs in small and medium-size enterprises in Canada, Mexico and the United States. In so doing, it provides a North American perspective on successful practices and some of the issues faced by small and medium-size enterprises in developing and implementing these systems. It also offers some suggestions for continued cooperation between the governments of the three countries on promoting EMSs.
Children’s Health and the Environment in North America: A First Report on Available Indicators and Measures
Published: January 2006
120 pages
North America is on track to be the first region in the world to publish a set of indicators of children’s health and the environment. The goal is to provide decision-makers and the public with periodic, understandable information on the status of key parameters related to environmental impacts on children’s health in North America as a means of measuring and promoting change.
The report presents indicators from Canada, Mexico and the United States in three areas: asthma and respiratory disease; the effects of exposure to lead and other chemicals, including pesticides; and waterborne diseases. The project is led by the CEC in partnership with the International Joint Commission (IJC) Health Professionals Task Force, Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the three national governments.
