In March 2006, the Library of Congress brought the “Song of America” concert and ancillary programs to Detroit, Michigan, the sixth city on the tour schedule. The Library’s Educational Outreach team conducted two Teachers’ Institutes during the visit to Detroit. The first institute was held at Oakland University on Friday, March 10, and the second at Warren Macomb County Community College on Tuesday, March 14, 2006.
Other Library-related programs were brought to Detroit in conjunction with the “Song of America” tour. In association with the Detroit Institute of Art, the Library’s Motion Picture, Broadcasting & Recorded Sound Division presented a film series on March 12, 19, and 26. The Library’s Veteran’s History Project presented a program on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the John D. Dingell Veterans Administration Medical Center for Detroit-area veterans.
On Tuesday, March 14, 2006, Thomas Hampson conducted a master class with “Vision,” the male vocal ensemble at the Detroit School for the Performing Arts. The following evening, “Vision” performed in the lobby of the Detroit Symphony’s Orchestral Hall, just prior to Thomas Hampson’s “Song of America” concert. While “Vision” was performing, concert attendees were invited to view the Library of Congress’s “Treasures on Tour” display. The exhibit included the original manuscripts of Detroit-related compositions such as Ferde Grofé’s American Biography: The Life of Henry Ford and Leonard B. Smith’s Hail Detroit March. The Library’s visit to Detroit concluded with the “Song of America” concert, featuring baritone Thomas Hampson and pianist Craig Rutenberg, on Wednesday, March 15, 2006.
