SPOTLIGHT ON CHILE: SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CLASSES  (http://www.localaccess.com/chappell/chile/classes.htm)
"In order to understand the social and racial diversity of Chile, it's necessary to first take a look at some of the early history of the country. Unlike many areas of Latin America which were explored and dominated by the Spanish because of the great wealth they had to offer, Chile's colonization was more indirect. First, the awesome geographic barriers of the Andes and the Atacama Desert made Chile less inviting. More importantly, the Spanish found no gold in Chile, as they had in Peru to the north, so they felt that the area had no wealth to be exploited". In English.

SPOTLIGHT ON CHILE: THE MAPUCHE  (http://www.localaccess.com/chappell/chile/mapuche.htm)
"The Mapuche, or Araucano, are an indigenous people that originally inhabited the southern portion of Chile in and around Region IX. The Mapuche had well developed societies, impressive art, and the people were accomplished warriors. The Mapuche leader, or toqui, was also the Maximum Chief in war, and his power was symbolized by a great stone hatchet which was engraved". In English.

THINKQUEST: PEOPLE OF THE LAND  (http://www.thinkquest.org/library/)
"The aim of this project is to describe the present situation of the Mapuche people, their culture, beliefs, education and language. It also pretends to analize racial prejudices, the ownership of the land, and their struggle to defend their rights." ThinkQuest is an online program that challenges students, educators at all levels to develop educational Web sites for curriculum and staff development. In English.
