Afterschool in Washington: A Smart, Strategic Investment- Statewide Afterschool Plan (PDF)
By School's Out Washington , Ed.
January 2006

Summary: This report indicates that in 2003, School’s Out Washington, was awarded funds to build upon existing efforts to create the Washington Afterschool Network to ensure that all young people have safe places to learn and grow when not in school. The Washington Afterschool Network is dedicated to creating strong community/school partnerships in an effort to expand quality after-school service in Washington State. The goals of the network are to foster statewide, regional, and local partnerships; to secure resources needed to sustain new and existing after-school programs; and to ensure that programs are of high quality. The report identifies areas where the Washington State Legislature can have the most strategic impact on supporting children’s success by improving after-school programs. With a biennial investment of $5 million in 2005-2007, Washington law makers would set into motion the following benefits for children: (1) create 50 additional after-school programs to make spaces available to approximately 9,000 additional children, (2) ensure high quality programs that support school success and provide training and professional development opportunities for Washington’s after-school staff, (3) support statewide after-school intermediary organizations to ensure economies of scale for supporting after-school programs, and (4) increase public awareness about the benefits of after-school programs. High quality after-school programs promote school success.
