By Connecticut Voices for Children , Ed.
March 2006

Summary: This brief indicates that business competitiveness in the recruitment and retention of talent is linked to universal access to excellent K–12 education. Education data are presented for Connecticut. There are over 577,000 students in Connecticut’s K–12 education system. Connecticut has over 57,000 full-time undergraduates in its public higher education system. Connecticut faces the following challenges: (1) students in the lowest income districts as compared to the highest income districts are almost two times less likely to attend preschool; (2) Connecticut is one of the ten States with the worst racial disparity in high school graduation rates; (3) one in ten Connecticut children in K–12 schools live in homes where English is not the primary language; (4) the number of English language learners in Connecticut’s K–12 schools grew from 20,191 to 25,869 between 1999 and 2003; and (5) Connecticut is losing a significant portion of its young adult population and other States are outpacing Connecticut in higher education attainment. Connecticut needs to invest more in education to maintain its place in the global economy.
