Literatures in English: Literary Indexes and Concordances

Note: Many of the resources listed under "Full-text Sites" include online books which are keyword searchable. Such a search mechanism can function in much the same way as a traditional concordance for locating specific phrases or passages in a work or by an author. Many of the resources listed under "Site Directories" such as Literary Resources on the Net and Voice of the Shuttle function as indexes to web-based literature sources.

Librarians' Index to the Internet - Literature and Books
Links selected by librarians grouped under such topics as authors, literature by place, literary movements, children's literature, genres, and many others. A listing of concordances here includes links for select plays, poetry, and the Bible.

Gale's Literary Index
This site serves as a master index to all Gale literary reference works. This index combines and cross references over 130,000 author names, pseudonyms, and more than 140,000 titles. One can search by author, title, or by a customized search.

Yahoo Search Directory: Literature
Yahoo's Literature page groups links to literature resources under broad categories such as authors, periods and movements, criticism and theory, electronic literature, and related topics.

Inter-Play
A web-based, multilingual index to plays published as part of collections, anthologies, or periodicals. It compiles many citations to plays not indexed by standard print indexes. Interplay contains 16,130 bibliographic citations and spans in date from the late nineteenth century to the present. Maintained by the Portland State University library.

Iowa State University Play Concordances
A concordance to a select group of plays by Ibsen, Shaw, Hellman, Wilde, Hansberry, and others.

The Web Concordances and Workbooks
Contains concordances for a number of prominent British authors. Among the collection are Shelley, Coleridge, Keats, Blake, Wordsworth, and Hopkins.
