Professional Development for the OSCE

April, 2002

Workshop Participants

Institute Trainers conducted five Negotiation and Diplomacy Skills Training workshops for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) during 2002. The first two programs were held at the OSCE Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo in April. The three programs that followed were held in October and December of 2002. Using a mix of interactive presentations and discussions, problem-solving exercises and simulations, Institute training aimed to strengthen the analytical, negotiation and third party skills of OSCE personnel working in the field. Equally important, Institute trainers facilitated the sharing of experiences among participants.

Sarajevo, April 2002

The program in Sarajevo focused on improving the skills of field staff members, especially as the Mission increases the number of national staff in professional positions. Two, three-day workshops were held for 70 international and national field staff from the Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina; a tenth of all Mission personnel. Two-thirds were national staff, coming from regional and field offices throughout the Federation and Republika Srpska. Mission members gained new insights on dealing with difficult people, assessing negotiating and conflict styles, and engaging in joint problem solving. The participant response to the training was enthusiastic; the workshops provided an excellent opportunity to share experiences with colleagues from throughout the country doing the same work on democratization, human rights, security and other issues.
