National Fact Sheets

The HIV Epidemic United States [pdf 120k] fact sheet combines results from the national 2007 YRBS and 2006 SHPPS to

  • Describe characteristics of health education and health services among U.S. high schools that may help address the problem.

State and Large Urban School District Fact Sheets*

1. States and districts listed above had weighted data for both the 2007 YRBS and 2006 Profiles. This means that for YRBS, the site achieved at least a 60% overall response rate. For Profiles, the site achieved at least a 70% school response rate. With weighted data, it is possible to say, for example, "X% of high school students in our state smoked cigarettes during the past month and X% of middle schools and high schools in our state taught tobacco use prevention education."

YRBS

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors priority health-risk behaviors and the prevalence of obesity and asthma among youth and young adults. YRBSS includes a national school-based survey conducted by the CDC and state, territorial, tribal, and local surveys conducted by state, territorial, and local education and health agencies and tribal governments.

Profiles

The School Health Profiles Survey (Profiles) is a system of surveys assessing school health policies and programs in states, territories, tribes, and large urban school districts. Profiles surveys are conducted biennially by state, territorial, and local education and health agencies and tribal governments among middle school and high school principals and lead health education teachers.

SHPPS

The School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) is a national survey periodically conducted to assess school health policies and practices at the state, district, school, and classroom levels.
