Nonviolent Struggles Against Repressive Regimes

The Role of the International Community

The number of examples of popular nonviolent resistance to repressive regimes continues to grow. This session will examine the role of international institutions in supporting local efforts to resist repressive regimes nonviolently:

  • How have nonviolent struggles gained the attention of the international community?
  • How can the international community better support nonviolent resistance to oppression?
  • Are there risks for nonviolent movements in relying on international support?
  • What lessons from past movements can the international community learn?

This discussion was webcast-live and included questions from the floor and the Internet audience.

Panelists:

  • Czeslaw Bielecki, Poland and Solidarity
  • Mkhuseli Jack, South Africa and the ANC
  • Srdja Popovic, Otpor and Serbia
  • Edita Tahiri, Nonviolent Conflict in Kosovo
