Government Accounting Office (GAO): Mad Cow Disease Improvements in Animal Feed Ban and Other Regulatory Areas Would Strengthen U.S. Prevention Efforts (January 2002)

   This GAO report (GAO-02-183) makes recommendations to strengthen the enforcement of the animal feed ban,    and to develop a coordinated strategy to increase inspections of imported goods. In addition, it recommends    alerting consumers when beef has been produced using the advanced meat recovery technology and may contain    central nervous system tissue.

The stated goal of this website is    "to share scientific information about BSE and information about the investigation of the recent U.S. case and the    systems in place to ensure U.S. beef remains the safest in the world." This site is partially funded by America's    Beef Producers through the Beef Checkoff Program on behalf of the Cattlemen's Beef Board and State Beef    Councils. It is partially funded and managed by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association."
