Library of Congress to Implement Moving Image and Radio Program Genre/Form Headings in New Cataloging
12/10/08
In spring, 2007 the Policy and Standards Division (which was then called the Cataloging Policy and Support Office) of the Library of Congress embarked on a project to create authority records for genre/form headings in the areas of moving images (films, television programs, and video recordings) and radio programs. To date, over 500 genre/form headings have been approved for use.
LC’s Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division (MBRS) will begin using the new LC genre/form headings exclusively on January 1, 2009; as of that date, terms from the Moving Image Genre-Form Guide (MIGFG), Moving Image Materials: Genre Terms (MIM), and the Radio Form/Genre Guide (RADFG) will no longer be used in new LC cataloging.
The Policy and Standards Division and MBRS are collaborating on a plan to update headings on existing bibliographic records.
