Healthy People 2010 and the
National Initiative to Improve Adolescent Health

The Healthy People 2010 initiative presents a special opportunity to promote the health, safety, and well-being of adolescents and young adults. Of the 467 Healthy People 2010 Objectives, 107 are important for adolescents and young adults. Because of the large number of objectives relevant to this population, experts convened to identify 21 Critical Health Objectives to focus on—these represent the most serious health and safety issues facing this population including mortality, unintentional injury, violence, substance use and mental health, reproductive health, and prevention of adult chronic diseases.

The National Initiative to Improve Adolescent Health by the Year 2010 (“The National Initiative,” or NIIAH 2010) grew out of the efforts of  Healthy People 2010, and is uniquely positioned to

  • elevate national and state focus on the health, safety, and well-being of adolescents and young adults (aged 10–24 years).

  • foster cooperation among different partners, including states, for attaining all 21 Critical Health Objectives [pdf 130K] for adolescents and young adults.
