Animal Health Monitoring & Surveillance

NAHSS Activity Update, April 2006

Surveillance and Data Standards Document

Version 1.0 of the Veterinary Services' Surveillance and Data Standards document has been completed and is in review. The standards document provides guidelines for those tasked with surveillance planning, evaluation and data management. The standards will be particularly useful to individuals involved in program management, planning new surveillance systems, reviewing existing surveillance, and those responsible for developing data collection and storage systems.

CEI Impact Worksheets

In response to many recent and significant international animal health events, the Center for Emerging Issues (CEI) has already generated 10 impact worksheets in 2006. Each worksheet examines the affected country's production and trade in livestock and livestock products likely to be affected by the disease. Risk factors for the United States, such as level of U.S. imports from the affected country and passenger traffic, are assessed as well. Eight of the recent worksheets available on CEI's Web site include: Newcastle disease in Azerbaijan, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Nigeria, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Argentina, FMD in Egypt, HPAI in Egypt, HPAI in India, HPAI in Jordan, and HPAI in the non-EU countries of Europe. Two additional worksheets are in the clearance process for external release, addressing HPAI in the EU and HPAI in the Middle East. Please visit CEI's Web site to view the latest information.
