NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING AND COMMENTS PERIOD Posted August 29, 2008

Amendment to 2007 Policies Governing Services for Children with Disabilities NC 1504-2

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Exceptional Children Division will hold a public hearing for the purpose of receiving comments from interested persons regarding the Department’s proposed amendments to Sections NC1504-2.1(d)(1)(ii) and NC1504-2.9(a) and (b)(3) of Policies Governing Services for Children with Disabilities (Policies) pursuant to Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA). The date and time for the Public Hearing are as follows:

September 17, 2008, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

All members of the community are encouraged to attend this meeting: parents, teachers, family members, community service representatives and all others with an interest in education. There is no advanced registration for this public meeting, nor any cost.

The meeting site is accessible to individuals with disabilities. If you need an auxiliary aid or service, you must contact the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction at (919) 807-3976 or (919) 807-3996 at least two weeks prior to the scheduled meeting date.

Interested citizens are invited to comment on the proposed amendments to the Policies beginning September 10, 2008 through October 9, 2008. In making comments, please give the citation for the section(s) to which you are commenting, i.e. NC1504-2.9, and provide comments in the form of a statement. North Carolina Extended Content Standards
The No Child Left Behind Act requires that all students, including those with the most significant cognitive disabilities, have access to the standard course of study at grade level. This document provides entry point extensions so that all students can have meaningful and functional access to grade level standards. This reference document should be used to develop goals, activities and materials for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. The following presentation on how to use the extended content standards may assist the process of developing goals, activities and materials.
