AFRICANA SUBJECT FUNNEL REPORT

ALC CATALOGING COMMITTEE

Fall 2004

A total of 11 new and 5 revised subject authorities have been submitted to the Library of Congress since the last update (Spring 2004), through the end of October. These proposals came from Lauer, Janet Stanley (Smithsonian) and Shoshana Seidman (Northwestern).

NEW HEADINGS

Bemazava (Malagasy people) Ngoni language (Tanzania and Mozambique)
Bisa language (Burkina Faso & Ghana) Sambla (African people)
Mbugu (African people) Samogo (Burkinabe and Malian people)
Mbugu language Taabwa language
Mbugwe language Wawa (African people)
Ndo (African people)

REVISIONS SUBMITTED

Samo (West African people) Tera language
Samo language Wiya (African people)
Sembla language

In addition, a proposal was made to delete Somaliland, which is currently defined as the land of the Somali people. This topic should be covered by Somali (African people).

There have been many delays at the coordinator level, as I did additional research and often located related headings that needed changes or updates. I have in hand several dozen headings that should go out to the alc-saco list within the next month; plus about 20 already vetted headings that need inputting.

There are sometimes delays at the Library of Congress, especially with complicated headings where various authorities do not agree. Sometimes LC changes the proposed heading (e.g., Lwoo (African people) instead of Lwoo (African peoples)) or adds more reference sources, e.g. African studies centre web site. TheSpring proposal to change Fula to Fulbe and Fulfulde language was pulled back.

I continue to monitor the Tentative Weekly List and Weekly List of new headings and have noticed a marked use of data from the web. Not all of these web sources appear to be authoritative or original. The appendix lists the 99 new subjects submitted by non-funnel sources. There are also many revised proposals. Some of these were poorly researched and have caused incorrect subject headings to be assigned to bibliographic records.
