AFRICANA SUBJECT FUNNEL REPORT

ALC CATALOGING COMMITTEE

FALL 2002

A total of 19 new and revised subject authorities have been submitted to the Library of Congress since the last update (Spring 2002).

The following new subject authorities were submitted.

African wit and humor, Pictorial
Chuwabo language
Folk literature, Luo
Folk literature, Swazi
Gbe languages
Guji (African people)
Hurutshe (African people)
Irigwe (African people)
Karrayu (African people)
Mankanya (African people)
Marine painting, South African
Nkanu (Central African people)
Nkanu (Nigerian people)
Nyiha (African people)
Proverbs, Dida
Safwa language
Tarok language

The following revised subject authorities were also submitted:

Menda-Nkwe (Cameroon people) - replacing Manda (African people [of Tanz.])
Tarok (African people) - revision of Yergam (African people)

All except one of these headings were submitted in the last 3 weeks. Chuwabo was submitted on Aug. 30th and appeared on the Oct. 30th Weekly List of approved subjects.

A classification number for Chuwabo was also submitted, with 2 options. The second option (PL8115.97) was accepted, with further divisions by Table P-PZ15c. This was a new classification table published in the Weekly Classification List for Sept. 18, 2002. It is identical to Table P-PZ15a (the default for PL8nnn languages that are not Cutter numbers) except for a new division for "Style" and reclassifying Folk literaure in subclass GR.

Since April 2002, I have added 57 headings to my file of proposed new or revised headings. Many are from a personal backlog; other recent contributors: Janet Stanley and Shoshana Seidman. A change in the format for submission and unfamiliarity with procedures for verifying geographic headings slowed work by the coordinator.
