Africana Librarians Council

AFRICANA SUBJECT FUNNEL REPORT

ALC CATALOGING COMMITTEE

Spring 2004

A total of 28 new and 20 revised subject authorities have been submitted to the Library of Congress since the last update (Fall 2003). Almost all of these were submitted in March. Initial drafts were submitted to the funnel by Lauer, Janet Stanley (Smithsonian), Shoshana Seidman (Northwestern), and Peter Limb (Michigan State). The 62 new headings submitted from non-funnel sources are listed in the appendix.

Processing at LC takes one-two months if there are no problems. Proposals submitted to the coordinator are usually forwarded within a few weeks if there is no complication. Many do have complications such as related headings that need work, proposed changes that run contrary to current LC practices, and proposals without books to which one would attach the heading. I am currently holding about a dozen headings that have already been sent to the funnel list. I also have notes on several hundred more headings that are mostly of lower priority.

Many of the submitted headings were either changed or held back by LC. In many cases, this involved differences between “the terminology used in current literature on the topic in question” (preferred by coordinator & H202) and the current LC preference for the form used by “authoritative reference sources.” A message proposing that this be changed was submitted to the PCC (Program for Cooperative Cataloging) list on May 5th.
