Flag football league ready to kick-off

The 2008 Camp Smith Intramural Flag Football League season is scheduled to kick off at Bordelon Field Oct. 21.

The league is open to all Marine Corps Base Hawaii active duty service members, Department of Defense civilians and eligible dependents 18 years and older.

“Flag football is a more leisurely sport. It is a safer alternative to tackle football,” said Kelly Fornes, Camp Smith Semper Fit sports and fitness coordinator.

Fornes added that players get more time on the field and the game provides a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition.

“Participating in the league gives our shop something fun to do together and it’s a chance to play a sport I haven’t played since high school” said Pfc. Scott A. James, Pacific G-6 customer service liaison with Headquarters and Service Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.

Games are planned for Tuesday and Thursday evenings to encourage participation from Kaneohe Bay personnel, said Curtis Stranghoener, Camp Smith Semper Fit assistant sports coordinator.

There are currently four teams in the league but more teams are wanted.

“It’s not too late to get a team in,” said Fornes. “The teams do not necessarily have to be from one unit,” Fornes said. “All you need to do is get eight people together and join up.”

Fornes emphasized all are welcome to play and mixed gender teams are encouraged.

“The more teams, the merrier,” said Stranghoener. “We encourage everyone to participate, either by playing or coming to cheer on the teams.”

Teams can join the league until the first game of the season which is scheduled to be held at 5:00 p.m. Oct. 21 at Bordelon Field.

A final schedule will be determined depending on new teams joining.

Individuals or teams interested in joining or obtaining more information can contact either Stranghoener or Fornes at (808)477-0498.
