General Fishing Report:
January 7th 2009 Fishing Report While ice fishing can be a productive way to put fish in the freezer, anglers should be patient and cautious. Because Kansas weather is so variable, cold spells can be followed by warm days, making even thick ice treacherous. Wait for at least 4 inches of clear, hard ice, which can require several weeks of very cold temperatures. Anglers should tread with care, making test holes near shore before venturing out. Never go near open water or on rivers with even the smallest trickle of current. Also be wary of lakes that harbor large numbers of waterfowl that may keep parts of the lake open most of the winter. For more information about ice fishing go to: http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/news/Fishing/WHEN-THE-ICEMAN-COMETH,-THE-ANGLER-GOETH Most of the main lake is open today but you will need to launch from the Pomona State Park ramp # 3 or break thin ice from Adams Grove. Fisherman are fishing at both North Shore and Lighthouse bay Marinas. I would expect more ramps to open in the next day and the wind helps to melt the ice. Watch out for slick ramps and docks. Time to start thinking about winter fishing. This time of year can be outstanding for catching fish! Fish tend to stay where the structure is. Some of the best fishing success has occured during the colder months of winter when the lake was accessable just after ice off or when schools of fish can be located and vertically fished. Dress warm and be patient locating the schools then use shad type artifical baits or jigs to catch fish. Fish are less active in cold water so you will need to work the jig slower than you would normally. Fish just above where you locate the schools as fish look upward when feeding. Schools move around some and you will have to relocate them as you fish. Fisherman can get out of the wind by fishing the Outlet stilling basin. The lake is beautiful this time of year and we still have hundreds of migratory birds and lots of bald eagles. There are not many people at the lake but it is a good time to be outside fishing if you are prepared for the colder weather. The surface temperatute is 32 degrees. Baits and equipment is readily available around the lake and Light House Bay and North Shore Marinas are good places to start a fishing trip on the lake. Don't Be A Sinker! Wear a life Jacket! The Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks has a zero tolerance policy for lifejacket violations.
