The Office of Educational Technology (OET) is responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of the Department's educational technology policies, research projects and national technology summits. The Office's main goal is to maximize technology's contributions to improving education through developing national educational technology policy and implementing policy department-wide, to support the goals of No Child Left Behind.

In 2005 OET produced the publication The National Education Technology Plan, which provides a summary of the challenges in our schools, the importance of technology, current student attitudes regarding technology and recommendations for meeting the challenges of No Child Left Behind through technology.

What's New...

  • Technology-Based Distance Education Courses for Public Elementary and Secondary School Students: 2002–03 and 2004–05 (June 2008). This report details survey findings designed to provide policymakers, researchers, and educators with information about technology-based distance education courses in public elementary and secondary schools nationwide in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The survey found that distance education enrollments increased 60% from an estimated 317,070 enrollments in 2002-03 to 506,950 in 2004-05 and that school districts and state virtual schools are increasingly serving as course providers. Seventy-one percent of school districts with students enrolled in distance education courses said they planned to expand access to these courses for students. The survey also documents a significant shift in the technology used to provide distance education courses, from two-way video to computer-based methods.

  • Evaluating Online Learning: Challenges and Strategies for Success (July 2008). As with any education program, rigorous evaluations are essential to guide program implementation and to gauge student achievement. This publication features seven evaluations of online learning programs that represent a variety of methodological approaches tailored to the type of program being evaluated. The goal of this document is to assist evaluators and program leaders who seek to use data to inform program improvement aimed at achieving positive outcomes for our nation's students.

  • Innovations in Education: Connecting Students to Advanced Courses Online (December 2007): This report highlights six providers of academic coursework that deliver advanced courses online. Online learning might be an enticing option for schools and students because it expands the range of academic experiences, provides access to highly qualified teachers and reinforces 21st century skills such as time management and technology skills. Schools that lack the resources to provide a broad array of advanced courses will find this document helpful as they consider the advantages of online learning.
