The Office of Scholarly Programs, in conjunction with the Dana Foundation, Heinz Family Philanthropies and the National Institute of Mental Health, sponsored a two day conference, "Demons of the Mind: 21st Century Science vs. Depression," bringing together 26 of the country's top neuroscientists and mental health experts to discuss the latest findings on the reach, effects, costs, management and potential for future treatments for mental depression.
Speaker Biography: Dr. Steven Hyman is a noted neuroscientist and author whose laboratory research focuses on how the neurotransmitter dopamine produces long-term changes in brain function by regulating the expression of genes. Earlier in his career, he served as director of the National Institute of Mental Health and director of psychiatry research at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Speaker Biography: Ronald C. Kessler is a professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School and the principal investigator of the National Comorbidity Survey, the first nationally representative survey of the prevalence and correlates of psychiatric disorders in the United States. Kessler is also the co-director of the World Health Organization's World Mental Health surveys, a series of nationally representative epidemiological surveys carried out in 28 countries with a combined sample size of over 200,000 respondents. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the MacArthur Foundation networks in successful midlife development and development and psychopathology. Awards include Research Scientist and MERIT Awards from the National Institute of Mental Health.
