Maynard, MA -- Half the states in New England are federal snow emergencies as a result of severe winter weather in early March.
Record and near record snows covered New England March 5 to 7 blocking roads and threatening public health and safety. President Bush declared a federal emergency in Maine on March 20, and in Massachusetts and New Hampshire on March 28. An emergency declaration has been requested for Vermont.
These emergency declarations allow eligible applicants to recover 75 percent of eligible costs of opening the roads and removing the threats to public safety. Eligible applicants include state agencies, county and local governments, and certain private non-profit organizations which provide government-like services. Eligible costs include the cost of equipment, supplies and overtime pay.
Applicant briefings for public officials have been held in Maine and are being scheduled in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. These briefings inform the applicants how to apply for assistance and what costs are eligible.
