Following the success of Nepal’s pro-democracy movement in April 2006 that checked the power of the country’s autocratic king, and the ensuing ceasefire between the new government and the Maoist insurgency, the Himalayan nation is edging toward inclusive democracy.

Yet some of the largest hurdles still lay ahead for Nepal as it enters a period of transition, including peace talks between the government and the Maoists, engaging in a constitutional process, addressing reform of the army, reintegrating Maoists into society including within the army and police, addressing past abuses, and keeping a check on criminal elements who may threaten the peace.

The speakers will address the opportunities for Nepal as well as the challenges in the wake of recent events.
