Glacier Studies Project

Information pertaining to the U.S. Geological Survey's Glacier Studies Project is presented, including links to relevant USGS and non-USGS publications. The Glacier Studies Project is funded by the U.S. Geological Survey's Global Change Science Program, a component of the 13 Federal interagency U.S. Climate Change Science Program of which the U.S. Department of the Interior is a member.

Satellite Image Atlas of Glaciers of the World (Task 1):

U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 2005-3056

Includes links to two provisional tables that will be included eventually in Chapter (Volume) A, State of the Earth's Cryosphere at the Beginning of the 21st Century: Glaciers, Global Snow Cover, Floating Ice, and Permafrost and Periglacial Environments, of the 11-chapter (volume) U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1836-A-K:

  • Areal Extent of Present-Day Glaciers
  • Estimated Present-Day Area and Volume of Glaciers and Maximum Sea Level Rise Potential

Williams, R.S., Jr., and Ferrigno, J.G., editors and contributing authors, 1988-, Satellite image atlas of glaciers of the world: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1386-A-K.

Long-term international project to use Landsat MSS images acquired in the mid-1970's to establish a baseline for the areal distribution of the Earth's glaciers. More than 100 U.S. and foreign scientists, from 25 countries, representing 45 different institutions, have collaborated in the preparation of 10 geographic-area chapters and an introductory chapter on State of the Earth's Cryosphere at the Beginning of the 21 Century: Glaciers, Global Snow Cover, Floating Ice, and Permafrost and Periglacial Environments, the latter with a map/poster of the Earth's Dynamic Cryosphere.
