Success Stories: Schools at the Leading Edge of Reform - Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Time: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM ET
 Description Where To Watch Show Resources

In January 2009, as the U.S. Department of Education and our entire nation observes the transition from one Administration to the next, Education News Parents Can Use will take a look back at some of the most engaging topics explored on shows from the recent past. We will reflect on five educational issues of significance to the achievement and well being of students—and the success of schools—from a fresh point of view, and with the help of some very special guests.

The January edition of Education News will showcase the Department’s Washington-based Teaching Ambassador Fellows—five teacher leaders who are spending a year at the Department of Education, contributing their firsthand knowledge and experience to the development of federal education policy. The five Fellows come from different regions of the country and a variety of school backgrounds, and they bring an essential perspective to the challenges and rewards of teaching in 21st Century America.

Throughout the broadcast, Fellows will reflect on and discuss a range of topics, from early childhood education to the value of service learning, and from supporting English Language Learners to the challenges of recruiting, preparing, retaining and compensating teachers. The program will also feature videotaped success stories from innovative schools and school districts, including:

  • An early childhood education program in Kalkaska, Michigan, dedicated to developing student’s pre-literacy skills by increasing their vocabulary and enhancing letter awareness and knowledge;

  • The story of a high school senior dedicated to serving her community and inspiring action to feed the hungry in Sedalia, Missouri;

  • The Appleton (Wisconsin) Area School District’s Education for Healthy Kids Initiative which has successfully integrated health and nutrition concepts into the core academic curriculum;

  • Foreign language instruction in Dearborn, Michigan, that strives to ensure students are fluent in Arabic and ready for the complex challenges of the 21st Century; and,

  • An innovative compensation program in Denver, Colorado, that ties teacher and principal pay and rewards to student achievement and success.
