Moorhead, MN -- Twelve more counties have been added to the list of counties eligible for federal disaster assistance following the floods that began on June 9, disaster recovery officials announced today.

"Roseau was the initial county eligible for federal assistance in the President's June 14 declaration," said C. Michel Butler, federal coordinating officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). "Our review of additional information indicated enough significant damage to declare more counties eligible for federal help."

Kittson, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, and Red Lake are the additional counties designated for Individual Assistance. Residents and business owners located in these counties may be eligible for FEMA disaster housing assistance, low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to repair or replace storm-damaged property, or grants from the state for serious needs and necessary expenses not met by other programs.

Becker, Beltrami, Clay, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau counties qualify for Public Assistance. These counties may be eligible for federal funding for the removal of debris and the repair of storm-damaged public facilities such as roads and bridges.

State and federal officials urge disaster victims in all the declared counties to call the registration number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585.

To date, 1,500 residents have registered for disaster assistance through FEMA's toll-free registration. More than $1.7 million in disaster aid has been approved.
