Ambulatory Care Visits for Asthma: United States, 1993-94
Advance Data 277. There were an estimated 13.7 million annual ambulatory care visits for asthma in 1993 and 1994, according to a new report from the National Center for Health Statistics titled "Ambulatory Care Visits for Asthma: United States, 1993-94." This report presents demographic data regarding patients (such as age, sex, and race) along with trend data, geographic data, information regarding diagnostic and procedural services, and other information routinely obtained for medical care.
Data Highlights:
Four-fifths of ambulatory
care for asthma was provided in physician offices.
The office visit rate for asthma
increased 50 percent between 1980-83 and 1993-94.
The office visit rate for asthma in
the Northeast was almost 2.5 times that in the South, although the prevalence of asthma
was similar among regions.
Bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory
agents were the most common medications prescribed for asthma in 1993-94.
