Recreational Therapy Section | [top]

Animal Assisted Therapy Programs are run in conjunction with the Recreational Therapy Section

Location:
Main Office: 14SD-214, 496-2276
Recreation Areas: 14th floor, 496-5157

Hours:

Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturdays, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This section offers medically based therapeutic recreation service, programs, and patient library services to all patients and their families. Facilities include an assembly hall, gymnasium, craft room, lounge, playroom, and weight room (all located on the 14th floor), and an outdoor playground.

Programs for both pediatric and adult patients encompass various aspects of recreation: prescriptive, leisure education, social activities, movies, arts and crafts, and trips into the community. Both group and individual (bedside) patient recreation programs are available.

Treatment services related to leisure lifestyle that are offered include: assessment in physical, social, cognitive, and affective domains; relaxation training; leisure counseling; communication skills, and leisure education. Both individual and group work is available.

Inpatient and Outpatient requests are made through MIS by selecting rehabilitation and then recreation therapy. For phone referrals call (301) 496-2278.

Therapy Dogs Program | [top]

The National Capital Therapy Dogs, Inc. (NCTD), also know as “The Caring Canines” is a non-profit organization that brings dogs and their owners to visit hospitalized children and adults. NCTD visits The Johns Hopkins Children’s Home in Baltimore and The National Institutes of Health.

NCTD has specific requirements for the dogs and owners. These are listed on their website.

The NIH Clinical Center Animal Program Director is responsible for insuring that all dogs meet certain health and behavior requirements before the dogs enter the Clinical Center.

Private Animals in the Clinical Center | [top]

Due to the risk of zoonotic diseases being contracted by Clinical Center patients, animals entering the Clinical Center must be cleared through the Animal Program Director’s (APD) office. The Animal Program Director can be reached at: (301) 435-5304. NIH police dogs are also cleared through the APD office.

Guinea Pigs | [top]

The Clinical Center in conjunction with the Clinical Center Recreation Therapy Program houses two guinea pigs in the 14th floor playroom. The playroom is open from

M-F 10:30 -12:00
M-F 1:30 - 3:30
M-Th 6:30-8:00

The playroom is specifically for Clinical Center patients and their visitors.
