SCEMS Internship

The mission of the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies (SCEMS) is to interpret the collective knowledge of the Smithsonian and serve as a gateway to the Institution's education resources. Through research, publishing, and staff development programs for the education and museum communities, the Center promotes the understanding and use of museums.

As the central office of education, The Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies (SCEMS) is well-positioned to give interns a broad overview of the Smithsonian Institution, introductions to the wide variety of work that museum and education professionals here are involved in, and an opportunity to participate in a deeper level with special projects.

Interns for 2008 will be selected to assist in the following areas (subject to change):

1. Programs – Available Year-round; 1-2 Positions

  • Education program planning – Spring Project: developing and implementing Smithsonian Day 2008 (4/22), an annual behind-the-scenes educational program designed for the 56 State Teachers of the Year.
  • Refining two web-based and downloadable Smithsonian Heritage Months Virtual Tours
  • Summer Seminars for Educators
  • On-going Education Projects

2. Museum Studies – Available Year-round; 3 Positions

  • Content research for the museum studies website: http://museumstudies.si.edu
  • Heritage Month Programs (http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/heritage_month/index.html)
  • Internship Services Available Summer
    • Enrichment program and tour planning, implementation, and evaluation for 300+ summer interns; Examples: Ice Cream Social, NetworkingReception and Career Day, Grant Writing Workshop, intern tour of Pentagon, etc…)
    • Assisting the Intern Services Manager with Administrative tasks, application processing and registratio
3. Publications Available Summer; 1-2 Positions

  • Fall (October - December) July 15th
  • Spring (January - May) October 15th 
  • Summer (June - September) March 15th [For Summer 2007, we had 40 applicants and awardd 3 internships] 

Hours:
Summer: Preference is given to interns who can commit 20 or more hours per week, Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Spring & Fall: At least 2 days per week or 16 + hours. Flexible schedule.

Stipend: None (See benefits)

Smithsonian Katzenberger Art History Internship Program Summer 2009

The Katzenberger Foundation Art History Internship Program is a need-based program supporting internships for undergraduate art history juniors and seniors in research and collections projects at the Smithsonian Institution, generously funded by the Katzenberger Foundation, and administered by the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies (SCEMS). 

Program Dates: June 8, 2009 to August 14, 2009
$5,000 Stipend Award
Open to undergraduate Juniors & Seniors majoring in Art History
