Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology

Some 35,000 rare books and 10,000 manuscripts reside in the Dibner Library. The collection encompasses works on engineering, transportation, chemistry, mathematics, physics, electricity, and astronomy—some of the documents are nearly six centuries old. The Library shares this unparalleled collection through exhibitions in an adjacent gallery, loans to other institutions’ exhibits, and public programs.
The Dibner Library Lectures on the History of Science and Technology feature notable speakers on topics including engineering, astronomy, architecture, medicine, technology, chemistry, and the history of the printing press. Some of these annual lectures are available online or in print. The Dibner Library was established in 1976 with a gift from the Burndy Library of Norwalk, Conn., originally created by Bern Dibner. The books and manuscripts of the Dibner Library are cataloged in the international databases OCLC, RLIN, and the Smithsonian's own online catalog, SIRIS.
For more information on the Dibner Library please visit the Dibner Library Web site.
