The Naval Academy athletic program is not just
an extracurricular activity, it is part of the mission, and as such
receives a priority much different than at civilian schools. The
athletic teams are an integral part of the overall education of
a total person. Athletics provide leadership opportunities and the
experiences of team play, cooperative effort, commitment and individual
sacrifice for goals that some may or may not be able to achieve.
Athletics play a big part of every midshipman's life at the Naval
Academy.
In the academy's program everyone has a wide variety
of athletic choices, as well as the required physical education
curriculum. The primary goal of the physical education curriculum
is fitness, which is so vital for midshipman health, personal appearance
and well-being. The Commandant hopes to raise interest and insure
proficiency in what we call “carry-over” sports that
our young men and women can enjoy for a lifetime, such as tennis,
golf, squash, handball and swimming. Here at the Naval Academy we
have excellent facilities for all midshipmen to gain the necessary
skill levels for future enjoyment.
Just as the Naval Academy promotes
the professional and intellectual development of midshipmen, so
also must it fulfill its responsibility for each midshipman's physical
development. This is met through an intercollegiate sports program
that is one of the broadest in the nation. Click on a link below
for more information about our varsity teams.
The Naval Academy sponsors a full
program of Club Sports as a complement to the Varsity Intercollegiate
program. These clubs provide the opportunity for athletes to participate
in intercollegiate sports that are not at a varsity level. Click
on a link below for more information.
The Physical Education Department
organizes the intramural
sports program for the midshipmen. Competition at the intramural
level is spirited, sometimes intense and allows all midshipmen to
compete at a level appropriate to their individual athletic ability.
Company teams compete in a variety of sports including:
Basketball,
3-on-3
Basketball, 5-on-5
Disc Football
Fieldball
Flag Football
Racquetball
Sailing

The Naval Academy's facilities
for intercollegiate and intramural sports, physical education, and
personal fitness are unsurpassed and not reserved for just a few
athletes. All midshipmen have access to these facilities, for team
sports or individual workout. Click on a link below for more information.
