Use of the Archives

The Archives is open to all researchers. Contacting us prior to a personal visit is recommended, since some of our holdings are stored off-site. Inquiries by phone, fax, mail and email are also welcome.

For information about the Archives' holdings see About SIA Collections, search online Finding Aids, or contact the Archives directly at osiaref@si.edu.

Collection-level descriptions of the Archives' holdings are also available on-line through the Smithsonian Institution Research Information System (SIRIS), an interactive, integrated system containing several Smithsonian research databases.

History of Smithsonian Research

For information on the history of the Smithsonian or the Oral History and Videohistory Collections, contact the Historian’s Office. Historians can respond to inquiries about Smithsonian Institution History weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm, except holidays. You may also search the History of the Smithsonian online catalog.

General Information

For general information about the Smithsonian, visit the Visitor Information and Associates' Reception Center. Before contacting the Archives, please check the Archives FAQ and Encyclopedia Smithsonian for answers to common questions and direction to the best sources for the most complete information.

Hours

The research room is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (except federal holidays).

PLEASE NOTE: The research room can be quite cool. Researchers are advised to bring a sweater or jacket.

Physical access to the reading room of the Smithsonian Archives is available by elevator.

Upon demand, the Archives will provide an enlarged print, Braille, or audiotape copy of Smithsonian Institution Archives publications.

The Smithsonian Institution Archives is located in the Capital Gallery Building, Suite 3000, 600 Maryland Avenue S.W., Washington, D.C., 20024. Capital Gallery is one block south of the National Mall on the corner of Maryland Avenue and 7th Street. There is an entrance to L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station just outside the building, the Archives is on the third floor.

AUTOMOBILES Not recommended. No parking available for patrons. We recommend driving to a Metro station with parking and using the train.
BUSES Greyhound Lines, Inc. and Peter Pan Trailways (1st and L Streets, NE) offer service to downtown Washington, D.C. Near the Union Station Metro stop.

Note: Train service at Union Station includes (1) Amtrak, (2) MARC Maryland Rail Comuter trains, and (3) VRE Virgina Railway Express. VRE also stops above-ground at the L'Enfant Plaza metro station.
