Volcanology Links - Research Interests
These links are to sites primarily concerned with some aspect of volcanological research: hazards mitigation, eruption or plume computer modeling, university programs, individual research, or volcanological groups.
- KWare ERUPT Program
- ERUPT is a graphical program that simulates various volcanic eruption types, including Strombolian, Plinian, Vulcanian pyroclastic flows and surges, Hawaiian fluid lava flows, fumarolic activity, and Peléean viscous lava dome emplacement. Tectonic (faulting), caldera and sector collapse, and erosional events are also simulated.
- Puff - A Volcanic Ash Tracking Model
- Puff is a volcanic ash tracking model. It requires windfield data on a geographic grid covering the area over which ash may be dispersed. Representative ash particles are initiated at the volcano's location and then allowed to advect, diffuse, and settle within the atmosphere. The location of the particles at any time after the eruption can be viewed using the post-processing software included with the model.
- NOAA: Volcanic Ash Forecast Transport and Dispersion (VAFTAD)
- Brief description and sample output of a computer program from the NOAA Air Resources Laboratory for estimating the location of ash plumes following eruptions.
- American Geophysical Union (AGU)
- News and Announcements, Science & Society, Meetings, Publications, Inside AGU, Member Services, and Archives.
- The Geyser Observation and Study Association
- The Geyser Observation and Study Association (GOSA) is a non-profit scientific and eductional corporation. Founded in 1983 and incorporated in 1988, GOSA's purpose is the collection and dissemination of information about geysers and other geothermal phenomena in Yellowstone National Park and elsewhere.
- NASA Goddard Space Flight Center: Planetary Geodynamics Laboratory
- Volcanology Research within the Planetary Geodynamics Laboratory includes Rootless volcanic cones south of the Myrdalsjokull ice cap glacier, Volcano Topography and Volcanic Hazards, Theoretical Modelling of Volcanic Processes, Volcanic SO2 Emissions, and Global Tectonic and Volcanic Activity of the Last One Million Years.
- Societe Volcanogique Europeenne
- The European Volcanological Society is an independant organization established in 1991 and based in Geneva, Switzerland. Its main goal is to develop international cooperation in the field of the forecasting of volcanic eruptions. The main function is to provide scientific and technical assistance teams and/or logistical support for expeditions led by scientists working in universities or in public or private laboratories. S.V.E. also organizes its own expeditions on active volcanoes, often in cooperation with institutions or agencies working on assesment, prediction, prevention, and mitigation of the volcanic disasters.
- University of Geneva: Natural Hazards Mitigation Group
- The Centre d'Etude des Risques Géologiques has information about their projects in Nicaragua, Guatemala, and the Philippines. Volcano pictures are also available.
- Science of Volcanic Lakes
- Site devoted to disseminating information on the science of volcanic lakes. Contains information on how volcanic lakes work and details about many specific lakes. Also has a large bibliographic database of published materials on volcanic lakes. Research done by G. Pasternack at Kelimutu is presented, and there are link lists for many other volcanic lakes and sources of information on volcanic lakes.
