Volcanology Links - Global Interests
These links are to sites concerned primarily with volcanology on a global scale: international organizations, space-based observations, or eruption reports.
- World Organisation of Volcano Observatories (WOVO)
- WOVO is an organization of and for volcano observatories of the world. Members are institutions that are engaged in volcano surveillance and, in most cases, are responsible for warning authorities and the public about hazardous volcanic unrest. It is a Commission of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI). A directory is provided of member observatories, staff, volcanoes monitored, and the monitoring networks at each volcano.
- International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI)
- The Association represents the primary international focus for: (1) research in volcanology, (2) efforts to mitigate volcanic disasters, and (3) research into closely related disciplines, such as igneous geochemistry and petrology, geochronology, volcanogenic mineral deposits, and the physics of the generation and ascent of magmas in the upper mantle and crust.
- NOAA: Satellite Services Division
- Volcanic eruptions produce clouds of ash that present a hazard to aviation. The Satellite Services Division (SSD) monitors volcanic activity through satellite remote sensing. The Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB), is the designated Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) for U.S. Flight Information Region. They also provide an index of recent volcano hazard alerts. Monitoring of volcanic plumes in other areas is done by other regional Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers.
- International Geothermal Association
- The International Geothermal Association (IGA), founded in 1988, is a scientific, educational and cultural organization established to operate worldwide. Its objective is to encourage research, development and utilization of geothermal resources worldwide through the compilation, publication and dissemination of scientific and technical data and information, both within the community of geothermal specialists and between geothermal specialists and the general public.
- Michigan Technological University Volcano Page
- Lots of volcano information and images. Sections on volcanic hazards mitigation, Central American volcanoes, remote sensing, a list of on-line journals related to volcanology, and some volcano humor.
- NASA Earth Observing System: Interdisciplinary Science Investigation Volcanology Team
- EOS is a series of polar-orbiting remote-sensing satellites planned for launch starting in 1998 and spanning a period of at least 15 years. EOS is a major component of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth. Lots of good information about satellite remote-sensing research. Volcanoes under study include Fernandina, Kilauea, Pinatubo, and Piton de la Fournaise. Also a good variety of educational outreach slide sets.
- NASA Goddard Space Flight Center: TOMS Volcanic Emissions
- Program to detect, track, and measure sulfur dioxide in volcanic eruption plumes from space using the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer instrument on satellites.
