MARCH

3-18-2007: Today I logged my first hour flying at Groton-New London airport in a T-34 with a great Dutchman named Fred Vanderwilt. The time in the air provided a chance for willing cadets to log hours towards their private pilot’s license and as I’m the type of person who does not like to let great opportunities pass by, I definitely jumped on this one. It was amazing! I went through the checklists with him, practiced turns, altitude changes, and basically got a feel for what it is like to navigate the plane. I returned from the flight fired up about pursuing my dream of flying. The feeling of flying will always make me smile. I am so excited to continue flying every Sunday. The Academy offers a range of great clubs you can participate in. There are a lot of choices, one for everyone-- though if there isn’t one for you, you can start one up! If you have the drive to do something here, you can do it. I have noticed that being here strengthens your internal beliefs and values. I firmly believe that everyone has the chance to reach and commit to their dreams, whatever they may be. But I know that most things take a lot of hard work and dedication. The Academy is a great place to get to know yourself better. You really figure out what kind of person and leader you are when you have to interact with such a variety of people. I would not want to be anywhere else.

End of March: This spring break was a great time. I went with the CG Crew team to Deland, FL where we had a training trip. We practiced two times a day, worked hard and had fun. It was my first time in Florida so I was very excited about being there. One of the days a group of us went to Busch Gardens and got free admission with our military ID’s. I thought that was a pretty sweet deal. Another day we rowed to a protected manatee area. It had beautiful, clear blue water. We didn’t see any manatees, but it was still amazing. The Coast Guard Academy spring sports teams usually send their teams to Florida every year so they can get a week of spring training in, plus be in a warm climate! Most athletes take this opportunity to bond and get to know their team. I've posted some pictures, enjoy!

The military is known for its heavy use of acronyms and jargon and USCGA is no exception. Here, we offer a DICTIONARY to help you feel right at home.
