Leonard J. Paulozzi, MD, MPH

Medical Epidemiologist, Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention, NCIPC

 

Leonard J. Paulozzi, MD, MPH, is a medical epidemiologist in the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC). His area of concentration is drug overdoses, especially those due to prescription drugs.

Dr. Paulozzi began his career at CDC in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) as a field officer assigned to Washington State to work on injuries and chronic diseases. After ten years with the Vermont and Washington health departments, Dr. Paulozzi returned to CDC to join the Division of Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities as director of the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program from 1995 to 2000. In 2000, he took a leading role with the Division of Violence Prevention in the design and startup of the National Violent Death Reporting System and other surveillance systems. He has been working in unintentional injury prevention since 2004.

Dr. Paulozzi received his Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Yale College and his medical degree from the Ohio State University. He received a master′s degree in public health from the University of Washington and is board certified in Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Paulozzi has authored and coauthored more than 80 publications. He has been an author of papers that have won the Langmuir Prize and have been nominated three times for Shepard Awards.
