Commander Francisco Alvarado-Ramy, MD, serves in the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ) at the National Center for Preparedness, Detection, and Control of Infectious Diseases, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). From his office in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he oversees medical and epidemiologic support for the quarantine system in the eastern half of the United States.

Dr. Alvarado-Ramy joined CDC in 1999 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer conducted research and the investigation of outbreaks related to healthcare-associated infections and other adverse events. He was a key member of the CDC response to the anthrax attacks in New York City. As a CDC assignee to the Puerto Rico Department of Health he served as State Epidemiologist and where he led the development of public policy on the prevention of serious morbidity and mortality from Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection, among other notable accomplishments.

Dr. Alvarado-Ramy received a BS from Tulane University and an MD from the University of Puerto Rico. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He holds a faculty appointment with the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He has been the recipient of national awards, such as the Juan Carlos Finlay Award from the US Public Health Service and the Martha Katz Award from the National Public Health Leadership Institute.
