Gap is Persistent: Extra Efforts to Raise Students’ Achievement Levels Remain Worthwhile (HTML)
By The Columbus Dispatch , Ed.
2006

Summary: This document indicates that the No Child Left Behind education law is needed to close the gaps in students’ achievement levels in schools. No Child Left Behind forces attention on achievement gaps between demographic groups of students. Some of the most disadvantaged students in Columbus, Ohio will have opportunities in 2008, when the first schools in Ohio will begin the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP). The program has a good track record with poor and minority students—80 percent of KIPP alumni are accepted to college. The KIPP approach is highly disciplined with dedicated teachers and an extended school day and year. The extra time helps students absorb materials and gives them more exposure to the healthy, constructive atmosphere of the school. KIPP students typically begin school below their grade level in reading and math and make great strides throughout the year.
