Decodable Texts for Beginning Reading Instruction: The Year 2000 Basals (PDF)
By James V Hoffman, Elizabeth U Patterson, Misty Sailors
2002

Summary: This report explores changes in texts for beginning reading instruction that resulted from the Texas State mandates for more literature-based teaching practices and materials. The report focuses on the Texas State basal reading adoption for the year 2000 and the impact of these new mandates on program features. Historical background and current trends in basal texts for beginning readers are discussed. Findings indicate increased attention to instructional design and decodability in the Year 2000 programs. However, a lack of attention to other crucial variables, such as engaging qualities and predictability may have produced mixed effects. The danger is that an extreme focus on decodability may ignore other factors that should be considered in the development of text for beginning reading. Appendices include: (1) “The CIERA Text Analysis Variables,” and (2) “The Texas Education Agency Text Analysis Procedures.” Contains 32 references.
