Ralph S. Caraballo, PhD, MPH

Branch Chief, Epidemiology Branch, Office on Smoking and Health, NCCDPHP

 

Ralph S. Caraballo, PhD, MPH, is the branch chief of the Epidemiology Branch in the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at CDC.

Ralph achieved his bachelor degree from the University of Puerto Rico, his masters in public health from the University of Puerto Rico in 1982 and his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1994. He joined CDC and OSH in 1995 as an Epidemiologic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer. Prior to his employment at CDC, he was an Assistant Professor at the University Central del Caribe in Puerto Rico, and before that he worked as a researcher in a Cancer Control Center, and also at the Psychiatry Department in the School of Medicine in Puerto Rico.  He also worked in Puerto Rico as a researcher on HIV/AIDS issues.

Ralph has served as a Team Lead in the Epidemiology Branch for the five years prior to assuming the acting chief role in the Epidemiology Branch. Ralph has numerous publications and scientific products in the area of tobacco control, nicotine addiction and the impact of the tobacco epidemic on youth and minority populations in the U.S. He has also provided consultation to state health departments and national ministries of health in the area of tobacco control throughout his 13 year career with OSH.
