new   Upcoming Accreditation Workshops
The CoA announces accreditation workshops for 2009!

Save the Date!
The 2009 Accreditation Assembly will be held May 28-30, 2009 in San Diego, CA. Additional information will be made available as soon as possible.

new   Call for Public Comments
The Commission on Accreditation (CoA) is making 3 proposed clarifications to the Guidelines and Principles for Accreditation of Programs in Professional Psychology (G&P) available for public comment. The first item introduces two new Implementing Regulations (IR’s) to clarify Domains D.1 and D.2 of the G&P for doctoral, internship, and postdoctoral programs. Each IR is available for separate comment. The second item proposes a clarification of the definition for “empirically supported procedures” as used in the G&P for doctoral and internship programs. These proposals can be viewed in further detail through the link above. Comments will be accepted until March 23, 2009.

Transition to a Commission
In an effort to provide updates to the various communities of interest involved in the accreditation of programs in professional psychology, the Commission would like to take this opportunity to provide you with the changes made to date in becoming a Commission and to update you on future plans.

End Date for APA Accreditation of Canadian Programs

  • The APA CoA will no longer accredit programs in Canada as of September 1, 2015, in accordance with the revised agreement between the APA and the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA).
  • Accreditation of programs in Canada will be handled solely by the CPA as of that date.
  • No new applications from programs in Canada will be accepted by the APA after January 1, 2008.
  • This new agreement follows several years of discussion and surveys, a 6-month period of public comment in 2004-2005, and approval by the APA Council of Representatives in 2007.
Application to Include Developed Practice Areas in the Scope of Accreditation Now Available!

The CoA now accredits doctoral graduate programs and predoctoral internships in (a) clinical, (b) counseling, (c) school psychology, (d) other developed practice areas, and (e) combinations of two or three of those areas.

A program may not apply for accreditation in a developed practice area until that area has been added to the scope of accreditation. See Implementing Regulation C-14 for further information.
