The topics selected by newspaper photographers to illustrate Christmas around 1910 may not differ greatly from television coverage of the holiday in more recent times. The Chicago Daily News focused on the arrival of Christmas trees for the season, shoppers buying gifts, the post office delivering huge numbers of greeting cards and packages, children who lived in institutions, children with handicaps, and charities providing assistance for people in need.

In the early twentieth century, many trees came on "Christmas tree ships" to Chicago's harbor by way of Lake Michigan from Wisconsin and Michigan (DN-0006954, DN-0065543). Fewer came by truck (DN-0000912). Other images show decorated trees in work places (DN-0002918, DN-0002917) and municipal Christmas trees displayed in Grant Park (DN-0061913, DN-0061915).
